So what’s in my headphones? Wouldn’t you like to know, well here is my Top 10 for September 2002.
1) Spearhead -Sometimes
Spearhead is hip hop jam band from San Fran that lays down a foundation thicker than the Empire State Building. This song is a lighter shade of their groove, but the lyrics really mak you go “Hmmm…”
2)LTJ Bukem -Airtight
LTJ Bukem, a dnb artist that is mostly known for his ambient mixing and hopping drum n bass beats, but this track is the sh*t! Oh my God, crazy mixed up beats, bottom heavy bass and out there pads. This song is dope and takes you on an incredible journey of sound. Now I know people give dnb a bad rap because “you can’t dance to it” well, screw them. Buy,download,or steal this track. It’s tight…airtight!
3)Motley Crue -Wildside
You gotta problem w/ that? Because if you do I have a whole lot of 40 year old friends w/ mullets who ride Harley’s. Take it up w/ them.
I know the lyrics are really cheesy, but if you’re a drummer you know why I love this track. That phat snare drum and tight bass drum….very nice recording.
5) Sheryl Crow -Steve McQueen
Before you give me any crap about this folks think about it. She writes her own stuff, plays guitar, she’s a rocker, and…..she’s hot!!!!
Plus, this song lays down quite the phatness.
6)Tony Royster Jr -Mort Pepper
So you think you can play drums huh? Mr. “I’m in a band and can cover any song huh?” Well, check out Tony’s blazing singles and poppin bass drum, crisp cymbal work and all around GROOVE! Pretty good huh? Oh yeah, by the way he recorded this when he was 12 years old. Now, go practice.
7)Victor Wooten & Carter Beauford –Zynergy
Oh yes, now we’re getting somewhere. Victor Wooten is that mad crazy bassist for Bella Fleck and Carter Beauford (just incase you live in Afghanistan) if the chops drummer from the Dave Matthews Band. Well I guess one day the Gods of All Creation got together and said “Hmm what could we do to make the world stop and drool, I know let’s put these two together and record it!” So they did, and now I’m humble. It sounds even like Bela Fleck got inthere to you know make it incredible. It’s a blue grassy funk/odd meter/swingy/technical/good lord what was I thinking, kind of song. Just go listen to it and then wipe your mouth.
8)John Scofield –Ideofunk
So there I am thumbing through my friend’s cd collection and low and behold I come across a Scofield album. My friend said check out this track. So I forwarded to Ideofunk and just as the song attacked my cerebrum, I felt a smack in the nuts. No, not from the incredibly soulful guitar wailing or 2 inch pocket the drummer is laying down, but it was a wiffle ball smacked dab in the groin. If there ever was song to get smacked in the nuts by it would be this song. Take a listen and shield the boys.
9)Jurassic 5 -Quality Control
This hip hopper is just plain sick, first heard on the Tony Hawk Tour, Jurassic 5’s “Quality Control” is the quintessential free style, hip hop of old. These guys are Renaseance Men. Bringing back the old w/ a shade of the new. Screw that one dj crap, let’s throw in two! J5 shakes your funk bone out your body. Get the ACE bandage!
10)Junkie Rush -Junkie Groove
Being from Orlando I HAVE to throw props to these guys. I’ve seen them a bazillion times and they rock hard w/ sucha soulful guitar sound. Damn, this is good. Junkie Groove lays it out hard and makes you move your sh*t. Scope them out at mp3.com/junkierush
Their live stuff is still better though.
There my friends go listen and let me know if I know what I am talking about or am I a complete ass. Here’s the shameless plug
Long live the tunes!!!
