In 1984 David Lee Roth left Van Halen and I left high school. Who would have thought Van Halen would go on to such killer success after Diamond Dave’s departure. What will become of that band now? Does anyone know?
Where is music heading?
What grandiose plans if any does the music industry have?
Some insiders claim it is the year of the (bands). Does this mean that finely true talent will show? Since I have already dated myself by bringing up Van Halen, let me point out how different things were when I was growing up.
Concerts were something you went to when you wanted to hear great music and see Rock stars in all their glory.
Since that time so many things have changed. Some I think for the better. Some things have changed for the worse.
I was told Gene Simmons of Kiss said ” Seattle killed rock n roll in the early 90’s”. In many ways I must say I agree. Before “Grunge” bands looked like bands and I don’t mean Glam. That’s another sick animal altogether. Let’s dress up in Mommies cloths and glitter and start a band. I am talking about post Glam just before the cancer set in. I am talking about a time when you could go out to a club and watch a great band. Not that you can’t do that today but how many awful bands do you have to sit through to hear talent? Does anyone know?
Now days any band can get a gig if they bring their friends and family. It used to be you couldn’t play the nicer venues if you couldn’t play! It used to be the club owners/bookers really listened to the promos bands would drop off. So the music fan knew where to go to be entertained.
Now the same breed of bands we used to call the cops on for noise are running the clubs.
The 90’s brought a look to rock as well as a sound. Rock stars started looking like somebody you might buy pot from. Does anyone know why?
Pop music went by way of the boy band yet again. Wasn’t this bad enough when it was the New Kids? These cookie-cutting artists with songs written only to sell an image to 11-yr. old girls are an outrage to a true music fan.
A great guitar player I know once said to me, ” if you have to have dancers than the music is doing its job”! He was right, music when written from the heart and preformed with true skill is plenty. What are these pop artists trying to cover up by culturing the stage? It has always driven me batty to see a pop star introduce the dancers and not the band.
Today we have shows like American Idol. Where some of the worst singers in the world show all on TV. We watch this because its funny but is it? Where were Mom and Dad when Jr. was “singing” why didn’t someone let them know they were awful? Does anyone know?
A side note from my musical rant. If the US does decide to attack So-damn-insane I hope we all will stand behind our troops. Whether we agree with Bush or not. These young men and women will be the ones risking their necks for our freedom. I for one agree with the removal of this tyrant. God bless thanks for reading my rant.
