Leon Russell and Phil Frazier by Phil Frazier
One night in 1986 I decided to go to Leon’s studio in Universal City, CA and see if he would listen to a couple of my songs. When I got there the studio was closed so I decided to hang out for a while to see if anyone would show up. About an hour later I saw Leon strolling over to the studio. I waited until he let himself in and then knocked on the door. He opened it and I said, “Hi Mr. Russell, I’m Phil Frazier and I would like for you to listen to a couple of my songs if you can spare the time.” He said, “Sure, come on in.”
Leon put the cass. tape into a player and the music came out of the big speakers in the studio. Man, it sounded great to me. He listened to two songs without saying a word. When the last song was over he said, ” You have some really good songs and you sing real good.” I sensed that this was going to be the end of the meeting. I thanked him and got up to leave. I shook his hand and asked him if I could leave the tape. He said that was fine. I did have my name and address on it. I left. I never heard from him but it was a cool thing and I remember it with fondness.
