The article that appears previously to this one said “We need a way to distinguish the polished post-Butch Vig radio-ternative schlock from the genuinely unconventional, edgy, garagy bands that are actually the Alternative to what’s on the radio.”
The internet! duh! If you waste all your time complaining about the scene — don’t listen to radio. Be informed via the internet. There are hundreds of high quality bands out there right. Tortoise. Isotope 217. Sea and Cake. Smog. Jim O’Rourke. Olivia Tremor Control. Neutral Milk Hotel. Modest Mouse. Stereolab. Pullman. Papa M. Dylan Group. HIM. Godspeed you black emperor! Shalabi Effect. Sigur Ros. Bjork. Air. Elf Power.
This is absolutly not a time to say that there is no alternative. There’s alternatives to these alternatives, and alternatives to those alternatives, and then there’s mp3.com and its alternatives.
And that list above doesn’t even include the myriad of high quality electronic stuff that is out there (Boards of Canada, Autechre, etc.).
Talking Heads shouldn’t even have the word rock used to descirbe them. They performed the function of the Talking Heads and only that. No need to classify.
Real bands. Real albums. Contemporary. Happening now. Check them out.
