Once in a great while, something comes your way at 2 in the morning, Eastern Standard Time, and, even though work is in just a few short hours, you feel you must share it. You might ask, “Benny, what do you feel you need to share with us?” And I might answer, “The Animatronics!” You might ask, “Like the dinosaurs from some crappy Universal Studios ride?” And I might answer, “No, like DEVO, The Cars and The Ramones together at last.”
If you are a fan of surreal lyrics, fun music and driving beats, then you need more Animalcium in your diet. Dr. Mr. Benny prescribes two songs a day with an extra dose when at the bar or at a party. Skinny black tie required.
The Free Stuff starts off with a harshly recorded track called “Christopher Columbus”. It crashed into my ears in a violently pleasing manner and then worked its way into a verse. The I’m-sucking-my-breath-in-and-singing-my-little-punk-heart-out lyrics and lively bass and drum interaction make you want to flail your body around like some coke-addled New Wave party frequenter. Soon after it comes the offbeat (when it feels like it) Bowiesque (vocally and somewhat lyrically) song, “The Bowie Doppelganger”. (I SWEAR that I wrote the “Bowiesque” part before reading the song title.) Aptly named and well done.
Later on, you are treated to “Monorail Man”, a song that seems to be the Ramones playing a song that DEVO wrote but never released. I felt like weeping like a baby hanging upside down, getting slapped for the first time. The cry that comes from sucking in fresh air for the first time. Probably the most accessible example of breathing new life into an old musical style. Classical artists are doing it all the time. A very few classic rock bands do it once in a while. But, with the exception of a few bands; The Huntingtons, Rancid, Bad Religion and The Circle Jerks, but that isn’t all that many; punk bands are pushing forward without much audible acknowledgement to the past. The Animatronics, with “Monorail Man” hold up a tattered sign for all the leather and denim clad kids out there.
